The Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers will return to the site of the NFL’s first regular-season game outside of the United States when they meet tonight at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City for Monday Night Football (8:15 p.m ET on ESPN).
But unlike that game – which the Cardinals won, 31-14 – neither team will wear a uniform patch to commemorate tonight’s matchup. The 49ers are also considered the road team after wearing their home uniforms back in 2005.
Thus, Arizona will be in its standard home uniforms, including white helmets, cardinal jerseys and white pants, while San Francisco will don its standard road look of gold helmets, white jerseys and gold pants.
The end zones will also be painted to match the those in State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Ariz., after displaying both team wordmarks in 2005, when the NFL set a regular-season attendance record with 103,467 fans, though that’s since been broken.
This marks the fifth regular-season game played in Mexico City, including matchup between the Houston Texans and Oakland Raiders in 2016, Raiders and New England Patriots in 2017 and Kansas City Chiefs and Los Angeles Chargers in 2019.
It’s also the 45th regular-season game on international soil in NFL history, including games in Canada, Germany, London and Mexico. The Cardinals are 1-1 and the 49ers are 2-1 outside of the United States, with both playing their other international games in London.
